MK Viral Message – 17 March 2024

We are aware of a message currently circulating that urges residents to “take precautions” ahead of a MK court case this coming week. The message makes further claims of army deployment off the back of civil unrest.

As is stands, we have no credible or verifiable information to substantiate these claims. Further to this, there has been no presidential order to deploy the army. As with previous fake viral messages, there is no name and/or source attached, no date or any other information to give the message credibility.

Given the nature of the instability of our water and power over the past few months, as an everyday precaution, most residents already have backup water on hand, and some form of alternate power, among other things. By default, households should already have a small stock of medical necessities for day-to-day incidents, and access to their chronic medicine.

As always, we ask that residents remain aware and alert, and if you notice anything out of order such as people tampering with equipment or infrastructure, or even have concerns with Municipal teams working on any infrastructure, please call either SAPS on 10111, Metro Police on 031 361 0000, the DNCPF Control Room on 063 643 7803, or your local security provider.

We ask that you rely on information either from your Ward Councillors, the DNCPF or other official structures, and refrain from sharing unverified voice notes and messages.

If you have first hand information to share, include a date and time when sharing.

Ongoing Municipal Strike – 16 March 2024

There has been no marked change in the current strike by Municipal workers, and as such many departments are still not working, or working at a very limited capacity. Staff from water, sanitation, electricity, roads, and storm water repair and CSW have all been under threat and intimidation, with reports of some violent attacks against those working. Those working may have a security detail alongside them.

We have been requested that for their safety, that no photos of staff or their vehicles whilst working are shared or circulated on any form of social media (Facebook, WhatsApp, etc.) Even once work is completed.

Please do not post on social media or WhatsApp groups as this could delay a response.

We ask that you rely on information either from your Ward Councillors, the DNCPF or other official structures, and refrain from sharing unverified voice notes and messages.

If you have first hand information to share, include a date and time when sharing.

Municipal Strike – 5 March 2024

We are aware of several messages and voice notes currently circulating that make reference to unsubstantiated claims of sabotage of municipal infrastructure such as water pipes and power lines in other areas. As is stands, we have no credible information, or verified occurrences of this occurring in our area.

We are led to the believe that the current strike by Municipal workers will possibly continue until Thursday.

RIP, Chad Russouw

It is with a heavy heart that we share the loss of one of our own, Chad Russouw, who passed away in hospital on 2 January 2024.
Chad was a dedicated member, colleague, and friend to many in the security and law enforcement community. He was always ready and available to step in, and step up when called upon.
His passion and commitment to this community was admirable, and his passing leaves a mark that will not soon be forgotten.
Rest in peace Chad, thank you for your service. We have the watch.

Incident regarding school girls – 14 November 2023

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
14 November 2023

On Monday 13 November 2023, a WhatsApp message began to circulate regarding an alleged incident regarding two school girls on Adelaide Tambo (Kensington) Drive, Durban North.
Despite our best efforts at the time, we were unable to authenticate the message or locate the original sender, until she contacted the DNU-CPF today.

From what we can ascertain, the two school girls were walking from a local school, to the McDonalds in Swapo Road. On the way there, they were followed and repeatedly harassed by men in a metallic blue vehicle, who were talking to and calling out to them whilst driving behind them. The girls, feeling threatened, started to run down the road away from the men.

A Westville CPF member, who happened to be driving past at the time, noticed the girls in a state of distress, and stopped to assist them, who proceeded to get into her car. It was here that a second vehicle stopped in front, but the CPF member was able to drive off. Both suspect vehicles left in the other direction.

For now, it appears that the motive behind this was either to a mugging, or a possible attempted abduction, but this has not been determined, as no physical attempts to pull the girls into the car had occurred as yet.

The incident has been reported to the Durban North SAPS, and further investigations will be conducted. The vehicle descriptions will be circulated to the relevant teams for monitoring.

We commend the actions of a fellow CPF member in stopping to assist and drive the school girls away from the scene.

Fence Hopper Increase – 9 October 2023

There has been a marked increase of fence hopping across our sectors over the last few nights around the 3-4am mark, which in turn has resulted in petty theft, but at the very least for scouting.

We urge residents to take the following precautions:

  • Be extra mindful of leaving valuables, like phones, laptops, etc, near windows, whether they are open or not, especially if you have low walls and no electric fencing, or open-profile gates;
  • Check that if you have perimeter beams, they are working correctly and are clean;
  • Make sure your external lights are working and/or come on at the right times;
  • Test your panic buttons, as well as your alarm triggers;
  • Consider investing in external solar/battery lights;
  • Check that your CCTV systems work and record.

PLEASE ALWAYS REPORT ANY TRESPASSING OR THEFT TO SAPS

when in doubt, press your panics,

alert your armed response and call 10111

National Shutdown – 20 March 2023

15 March 2023

The DNU CPF would like to assure the public that it is in regular contact across multiple levels and divisions in law enforcement, as well as with local business entities, and will advise the public as soon as possible if we are made aware of any developments that would threaten the general public.

At this stage, it is still too early to identify or anticipate if or how this will affect ours, or the surrounding areas. Being an unofficial long weekend, we are aware that a majority of businesses may be closed, regardless of the shutdown, and residents may be away.

Nonetheless, all key role-players have contingency plans, and the relevant teams have been placed on high-alert in order to respond swiftly and effectively, should the need arise.

Further to this, the North Durban Operational Control Centre (NDOCC) will be going live from today. This is joint operation between the Durban North & Umhlanga CPF, Greenwood Park CPF, the SAPS, Metro Police, the Greater Together Foundation PBO/NPO and local Private Security companies, which has been worked on tirelessly over the past few months.

We understand some residents may feel the need to stock up on necessities, in which case we urge you to do so in a responsible and calm manner.

We request that residents do not share or take notice of unverified messages and voice notes but rather rely on their relevant CPF structures and/or other verified sources of information.
