The All Truck Drivers Forum and Allied South Africa (ATDF-ASA) has announced the temporary suspension of the planned national shutdown scheduled for Monday.
ATDF-ASA Secretary General Gugu Sokhela told SA Trucker that the group’s leadership decided to shelve plans for a shutdown following an urgent meeting with relevant stakeholders.
The decision follows a visual meeting held on 19 May 2024, during which an implementation plan was agreed upon.
In an official statement addressed to ATDF-ASA members and South African drivers, the leadership conveyed their decision:
“On behalf of the All Truck Drivers Forum and Allied South Africans, we would like to inform you that our planned national shutdown is temporarily suspended. We will closely monitor the implementation plan agreed upon in our visual meeting on 19 May 2024 around 14h00.”
The ATDF-ASA leadership urged all members to refrain from any illegal actions and expressed hope that government departments would uphold their commitment to intensify inspections and enforcement of compliance regulations.
“We urge all our members to distance themselves from any form of illegal action. We hope government departments will do as agreed, intensifying inspection and enforcement in terms of compliance. We shall stand together and united.”
The announcement brings relief to many who were concerned about potential disruptions on major transport routes across the country.
Law enforcement agencies had been on high alert to prevent any lawlessness during the shutdown.
Further updates will follow as more information becomes available.
