National Truckers’ Shutdown Cancelled

The All Truck Drivers Forum and Allied South Africa (ATDF-ASA) has announced the temporary suspension of the planned national shutdown scheduled for Monday.

ATDF-ASA Secretary General Gugu Sokhela told SA Trucker that the group’s leadership decided to shelve plans for a shutdown following an urgent meeting with relevant stakeholders.

The decision follows a visual meeting held on 19 May 2024, during which an implementation plan was agreed upon.

In an official statement addressed to ATDF-ASA members and South African drivers, the leadership conveyed their decision:

“On behalf of the All Truck Drivers Forum and Allied South Africans, we would like to inform you that our planned national shutdown is temporarily suspended. We will closely monitor the implementation plan agreed upon in our visual meeting on 19 May 2024 around 14h00.”

The ATDF-ASA leadership urged all members to refrain from any illegal actions and expressed hope that government departments would uphold their commitment to intensify inspections and enforcement of compliance regulations.

“We urge all our members to distance themselves from any form of illegal action. We hope government departments will do as agreed, intensifying inspection and enforcement in terms of compliance. We shall stand together and united.”

The announcement brings relief to many who were concerned about potential disruptions on major transport routes across the country.

Law enforcement agencies had been on high alert to prevent any lawlessness during the shutdown.

Further updates will follow as more information becomes available.

Taxi Blockade and Go Slow – 16 April 2024

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

16 April 2024

TAXI BLOCKADES AND GO-SLOW PROCESSIONS

Over the course of today, Tuesday 16 April 2024, the DN CPF received multiple reports from various groups about large contingents of slow moving and/or stationary taxis resulting in severe traffic jams across several areas in Durban North, as well as along the N2, both North and South.

Metro Police and the SAPS were deployed to the scenes and dispersed the taxis, however in some cases the taxis relocated to other points.

A large convoy of taxis appeared to leave the Durban North area en-masse at around 18h30.

Reports seem to indicate that the reason behind the go-slows and blockades is that the taxis are unhappy with a long, ongoing multi-disciplinary operation aimed at fining taxis for varying offences and infringements.

From tonight Metro Police and SAPS will be closely monitoring the situation. The DN CPF are in constant contact with them and will provide updates to our residents as and when the information is made available, so we ask that residents monitor their local traffic, security or street groups for updates.

We ask that you rely on information either from the DNCPF or other official structures, and refrain from sharing unverified voice notes, videos and messages. If you have first-hand information to share, include a date and time when sharing to prevent circulation of old or outdated messages

MK Viral Message – 17 March 2024

We are aware of a message currently circulating that urges residents to “take precautions” ahead of a MK court case this coming week. The message makes further claims of army deployment off the back of civil unrest.

As is stands, we have no credible or verifiable information to substantiate these claims. Further to this, there has been no presidential order to deploy the army. As with previous fake viral messages, there is no name and/or source attached, no date or any other information to give the message credibility.

Given the nature of the instability of our water and power over the past few months, as an everyday precaution, most residents already have backup water on hand, and some form of alternate power, among other things. By default, households should already have a small stock of medical necessities for day-to-day incidents, and access to their chronic medicine.

As always, we ask that residents remain aware and alert, and if you notice anything out of order such as people tampering with equipment or infrastructure, or even have concerns with Municipal teams working on any infrastructure, please call either SAPS on 10111, Metro Police on 031 361 0000, the DNCPF Control Room on 063 643 7803, or your local security provider.

We ask that you rely on information either from your Ward Councillors, the DNCPF or other official structures, and refrain from sharing unverified voice notes and messages.

If you have first hand information to share, include a date and time when sharing.

Ongoing Municipal Strike – 16 March 2024

There has been no marked change in the current strike by Municipal workers, and as such many departments are still not working, or working at a very limited capacity. Staff from water, sanitation, electricity, roads, and storm water repair and CSW have all been under threat and intimidation, with reports of some violent attacks against those working. Those working may have a security detail alongside them.

We have been requested that for their safety, that no photos of staff or their vehicles whilst working are shared or circulated on any form of social media (Facebook, WhatsApp, etc.) Even once work is completed.

Please do not post on social media or WhatsApp groups as this could delay a response.

We ask that you rely on information either from your Ward Councillors, the DNCPF or other official structures, and refrain from sharing unverified voice notes and messages.

If you have first hand information to share, include a date and time when sharing.

Municipal Strike – 5 March 2024

We are aware of several messages and voice notes currently circulating that make reference to unsubstantiated claims of sabotage of municipal infrastructure such as water pipes and power lines in other areas. As is stands, we have no credible information, or verified occurrences of this occurring in our area.

We are led to the believe that the current strike by Municipal workers will possibly continue until Thursday.
